What is a Property Card?
Indian government is rolling out property cards: a government-issued electronic document that provides detailed information about property holdings, including the owner’s name, survey number, plot details, and transaction history. Initially known as ownership certificates, property cards are now available online through state land record portals. They were introduced to enhance transparency in land administration, reduce paperwork, and prevent property forgery and encroachment.
Importance of Property Cards
- Transparency and Accessibility: Property cards make land records easily accessible online, facilitating transparency in real estate transactions.
- Legal Assurance: They serve as valid evidence in court, showing ownership and any associated legal issues.
- Historical Data: Property cards provide past transaction and ownership history, aiding in informed decision-making.
- Fraud Prevention: By detailing any judicial cases related to the property, property cards help prevent tampering and fraudulent activities.
Obtaining a Property Card
To get a property card, one must register on the relevant state government’s land record website by providing personal and property details. Once registered, the system generates the property card in a few days.
